کشف قتل با کمک گوگل
در ژوئیه سال 2008 زنی 34 ساله به نام نانسی کوپر برای قدم زدن از خانه خود در کارولینای شمالی خارج می‌شود و هرگز باز نمی‌گردد. چند ماه بعد، در اکتبر همان سال، جسد زن در حوالی منطقه پیدا می‌شود. اولین متهم قتل، براد کوپر، همسر وی شناخته می شود.
پلیس کارولینای شمالی با همکاری FBI برای یافتن حقیقت بر روی این پرونده کار می‌کنند. پس از بررسی‌های نیروی ویژه FBI، مدرکی محکم برای اتهام قتل براد کوپر پیدا می‌شود. شاید باور نکنید ولی گوگل مپ دست این قاتل را رو کرد.
بنابر گفته مقامات پلیس، پس از بررسی لپ‌تاپ ThinkPad براد کوپر، مشخص شد وی در تاریخ 11 ژوئیه سال 2008، ساعت 1:15 بعد از ظهر، یعنی درست یک روز قبل از اعلام مفقود شدن نانسی کوپر، با نرم افزار گوگل مپ به بررسی اطراف محل زندگی خود پرداخته است. در زمان استفاده از گوگل مپ، وی روی دو منطقه زوم کرده و آنها را از فاصله خیلی نزدیک بررسی کرده است که یکی از آن دو منطقه، محلی بود که جسد نانسی در ماه اکتبر در آن پیدا شد. منطقه‌ای که تنها سه مایل از خانه وی فاصله داشت.
بنابر شواهد، در دادگاه اعلام شد که براد 37 ساله، همسر 34 ساله خود را ابتدا خفه کرده و سپس جسد وی را به منطقه‌ای که از قبل تدارک دیده منتقل کرده است. از لپ تاپ براد، کپی ایمیل‌های همسر وی نیز پیدا شد که نشان دهنده انگیزه قاتل است. ظاهرا نانسی قصد داشته بچه‌هایشان را با خود به کانادا باز گرداند.
البته قابل ذکر است که وکیل‌های براد کوپر تمامی اتهامات را رد کرده و معتقند وی که کارمند شرکت سیسکو است، درک عمیقی از تکنولوژی دارد و در صورت برنامه ریزی برای قتل، نگهداشتن تصاویر ماهواره محل قتل مضحک است. او می‌توانسته به راحتی هیچ اثری از وبگردی خود در اینترنت بر جای نگذارد.

While investigating the murder of Nancy Cooper, who never came back from a routine evening jog in 2008, police in North Carolina working with the FBI"s Cyber Task Force found damning evidence on her husband Brad"s ThinkPad laptop: Google Maps in his browsing history with locations that aligned with where his wife"s body was found, copies of his wife"s emails that would give him motive to kill her (she had plans to take their children back to Canada), emails that showed he was having an affair and emails between the estranged couple that revealed a relationship falling apart.
Cooper, 37, is currently on trial for the murder of his children"s 34-year-old mother in their home in July 2008. Authorities said afterward, he dumped the strangled woman"s body in a then-undeveloped subdivision only three miles away from their home.
Donna and Garry Rentz say they are dreading the trial of North Carolina resident Brad Cooper, who is accused of the murder of their daughter Nancy. NBC"s Janet Shamlian reports.
The police detective assigned to the case testified this week that in the days before his wife disappeared, Cooper"s laptop showed a browsing history of several "zoomed-in satellite images" using Google Maps that point to the area where Nancy Cooper"s body was eventually found
Chris Chappell, a Durham investigator who works with the FBI cybercrimes task force, testified that his analysis of the laptop showed that the Google image appeared to have been viewed at 1:15 p.m. on July 11, 2008, the day before Nancy Cooper was reported missing.
There were magnifications of two areas, Chappell testified Thursday, "including the area where Nancy Cooper"s body was found."
The defense also points out that there didn"t seem to be any evidence that Cooper, a Cisco employee, ever searched for the street his wife was found on. They tried to argue that it didn"t make sense that someone with such tech savvy would "intentionally delete cookies related to the search, but leave the satellite image."
