7.2 quake sways northwestern Mexico'
A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has struck the northwestern Mexican state of Baja California Norte, shaking buildings and creating panic as far as Los Angeles, the US Geological Survey reported on Sunday.
The quake struck at 2240 GMT at a depth of 20.1 miles (32.3 kilometers) and 16 miles (26 kilometers) southwest of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California Norte, Mexico.
Mexican civil protection officials said a man died when his home collapsed outside Mexicali, while local media reports said a number of people were still trapped in their homes in the town near the earthquake's epicenter.
The tremor — the worst to hit the region since 1992 — was felt as far away as Tijuana, Los Angeles, and Palm Springs, California, causing panic among the residents, reports said.
KABC television in Los Angeles said high-rise buildings in that city and in San Diego rocked back and forth when the quake hit.
Easter celebrations were interrupted in Tijuana as families rushed for open ground while some parts of Baja California saw power cuts and temporarily suspended rides at the Disneyland theme park in California.
Dozens of aftershocks were also reported.
